Houston Deco: Houston's Modernistic Architecture
Shamrock Hotel façade, 1949
South Main Street at Holcombe Boulevard
demolished
Completed: 1949
Demolished: 1987
Architect: Wyatt C. Hedrick

The Shamrock's star-studded grand opening provided the inspiration for the climactic scenes in Edna Ferber's novel Giant and the subsequent movie. Despite public outcry, the Texas Medical Center demolished the building to make way for a parking lot. Only the hotel's garage survives.
