German immigrants established the Houston Turn-Verein (a gymnastic or athletic club) in 1854 as part of the national Turn-Verein movement. The Turn-Verein helped popularize bowling in the United States. The Houston clubhouse's bowling lanes were located in the one-story rear addition. Although its clubhouse has been demolished, the Houston Turn-Verein organization still exists.
